Started by Keiji and Edith Kawakami, IOLANI began with four machines and seven employees crammed in a dirt floor room with a leaky roof behind a service station. Noted for his progressive and cutting-edge business tactics, Kawakami wanted to share Iolani’s success with the people that were most responsible, he started a Profit Sharing Plan in 1963. The company since then has grown as big as three factories and 200 employees and has established IOLANI’s reputation for being a leader in men’s and women’s contemporary fashion. All garments are designed and manufactured here in the islands and are a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Each garment is made with the highest quality products, and reflect a style unique to Hawai’i, and can be worn with confidence anywhere. Continuing the tradition set forth by his parents, Lloyd is taking the company into its next 50 years.
