The heritage of the Aloha shirt...

Warm balmy breezes and white sandy beaches. The crystal blue waters of the Pacific reflecting golden sunsets. Symbols of the islands of Hawaii. As symbolic as any Hawaiian treasure is the Hawaiian shirt, or properly described, the "Aloha shirt". The lore and history of the first "Aloha" Hawaiian shirts is steeped in the culture and heritage of early Hawaii. Original Hawaiian Aloha shirts first appeared in the 1920's, using colorful, unique and exotic fabrics offered by the merchants of the far east. Over a period of time, local artists emerged to create styles and designs that told stories and expressed the lifestyles and images of Hawaii. Ellery Chun, the owner of the King-Smith dry goods store, first coined the term "Aloha shirt". In fact Mr. Chun officially registered a trademark for his Aloha wear on July 15, 1936. Today, when we think of the Hawaiian islands, the Hawaiian "Aloha" shirt is one of the most synonymous images of this tropical resort.
